How to Clean a Top Loading Washing Machine

Your washing machine works hard to keep your clothes clean, but it needs a little TLC from time to time too. Here's how to clean a top loading washing machine.

Step 1: Empty the washing machine

Make sure the washing machine is empty of clothes and any other items.

Step 2: Set the water temperature to hot

Fill the washing machine with hot water.

Step 3: Add the cleaning solution.

You can use a commercial washing machine cleaner or a mixture of 1 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of white vinegar.

Step 4: Run the washing machine on the longest cycle

This will help to loosen any dirt or grime that has built up.

Step 5: Drain the water

Once the cycle is complete, drain the water from the washing machine.

Step 6: Clean the detergent and fabric softener dispensers

Remove the detergent and fabric softener dispensers and clean them with a brush and warm water.

Step 7: Wipe down the inside of the washing machine

Use a damp cloth to wipe down the inside of the washing machine, paying special attention to the agitator and the drain hose.

Step 8: Dry the washing machine

Wipe down the washing machine with a dry cloth to remove any moisture.

Step 9: Reassemble the washing machine

If you removed the detergent and fabric softener dispensers, reassemble them.

Step 10: Test the washing machine

Run a load of laundry to make sure the washing machine is clean and working properly.
